The Yagyu Clan has murdered Ogami Itto's wife, and had him stripped of his position of Official Shogunate Second (Kaishaku-nin). Now Ogami Itto and his son, Daigoro wander the countryside as the hired assassins know as... LONE WOLF AND CUB!

Ogami Itto is dead. What lives on is the desire for revenge upon the Yagyu.

Knowing this, Retsudo, evil mastermind of the Shadow-Yagyu, gives a special branch of the clan, the female Akashi-Yagyu Ninja, the assignment of killing Ogami. Meanwhile, Ogami is hired by the Awa Clan to protect the valuable secret of producing the purple dye Awa-Indigo by killing a defector who plans to sell the secret to the Shogunate.

"Child and Expertise For Rent" reads the sign on the crude baby cart that Ogami Itto pushes, carrying his infant son, Daigoro, as they wander the Japanese countryside.

Ogami Itto, disgraced Shogunate Executioner and sworn enemy of the evil Yagyu clan, rescues a girl who has killed a pimp in self-defense. For his actions, he is captured and beaten to within an inch of his life by Yakuza.

The Chief Chamberlain of the Kakegawa Clan hears of Ogami's ordeal, and understands that the harsh code of Bushido gave Ogami no choice but to endure the torture, when in fact it would have been easy for him to escape. Ogami is hired by the Chamberlain to kill Governor Sawatari, who arranged the death of the rightful Lord of Kakegawa and stole the Kakegawa fief. Sawatari, himself, offers to hire Ogami, but when Ogami refuses, Sawatari realizes that he is Ogami's target, and decides to trap the "Lone Wolf and Cub". Little does Sawatari realize that on the road to Hell, Death pushes a Perambulator of Peril!

His services cost 500 pieces of gold. Once he agrees to take an assignment, he never fails. But now Ogami Itto faces his greatest challange yet - he has been hired to kill Oyuki, tattooed mistress of the martial arts.

He was the official Shogunate executioner until the evil Yagyu Clan framed him and murdered his wife. Now all he has left is his son Daigoro, a crude baby cart, his swords, and his desire for revenge.

While searching for Oyuki, Daigoro and Itto are separated, and Daigoro meets Yagyu Gunbei, master swordsman and loser of the duel which won Ogami his position as official executioner. Gunbei recognizes Daigoro and is about to kill him when Ogami appears and accepts his challenge to a duel. After the duel, father and son continue their search while dealing with several bands of Yagyu assassins sent to ensure their failure.

When Ogami finally meets Oyuki, he realizes that she does not deserve her fate. Yet the code of Bushido demainds that Ogami carry out his assignment, which he does with great regret.

After giving Oyuki a proper cremation, Ogami brings her ashes to her father. But lurking in the shadows, plotting his demise is the evil Lord Retsudo.

And this time, he's brought an army to ensure the job gets done right.

His sword is sharp, swift and for hire. 500 pieces of gold will buy his services; and once he accepts a commission, the fate of his target is sealed! His name is Ogami Itto, the former Shogunate executioner. After the evil Yagyu clan frames him for heresy and murders his wife, Ogami roams the Japanese countryside with his infant son Daigoro and a crude wooden baby cart as the paid assassin known as... LONE WOLF AND CUB!

Five retainers of the Kuroda clan seek out Ogami to enlist his aid in saving the Clan. But first, they must ensure that he is capable of helping them. Each in turn seeks out Ogami. If the Lone Wolf can defeat them, then with their dying breaths they will explain his mission - and give him 1/5 of his fee.

Lord Kuroda has retired and his true successor is his son, young Lord Matsumaru. However, Kuroda is so besotted with his mistress that he decides their daughter should suceed him. He imprisons his son, and is raising his daughter as a boy. Jikei, a high priest trusted by Kuroda, has been given a document that details the Lord's plans.

Unfortunately for the Kuroda Clan, Jikei is a spy, and he sets of to deliver the incriminating document to the Yagyu, thus ensuring the Kuroda's demise. Only Ogami Itto has the skill to kill Jikei and recover the document before it reaches the hands of the evil Lord Yagyu Retsudo.

After retrieving the document, Ogami learns his mission is not quite finished. The only sure way to ensure the rightful succession is to kill Lord Kuroda, his mistress and their daughter. But, in order to reach the demented Lord, he must confront and slay Lord Kuroda's loyal retainers - the same men who knowing it meant certain death, hired Ogami to save their Clan!

In this, the final film; the evil Lord Yagyu Retsudo, having failed in his previous attempts to eliminate Ogami, deploys his ultimate weapons; his daughter, Kaori, his stepson Hyouei, and Hyouei's supernatural warriors, who are capable of moving through the earth as if it were water.

If they fail, Retsudo knows that he will have no choice but to unleash the entire remaining might of the Yagyu Clan upon Ogami. Outnumbered by more than 1000 to 1, Ogami will surely die. If he survives, it will because he has slain every warrior in the Yagyu Clan.

Once again, Ogami Itto and his son ae about to enter the Crossroads to Hell. But this time, they may not return!
