M.I. Hummel figurines are based on the
drawings of a Franscian nun, Maria Innocentia Hummel (born as Berta Hummel - 1909/1946
), created by her during her convent years. The figurines are exclusively made in
Germany
by W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik of Rodenthal, Germany.
First introduced
in 1935 during the Leipzig fair they have become highly collectible since.
Porcelain
figurines, waterglobes and musicals inspired by Berta Hummel's childhood drawings
were introduced in 1997. These are marked BH followed by a number.
The Berta
Hummel collection is manufactured for Goebel in the Far East as a less expensive
gift giving alternative to the original M.I. Hummel figurines.
Franz Detleff
Goebel and his son, William, founded the Goebel Porzellanfabrik in 1871.
In 1890,
the first Goebel Porcelain figurines were introduced.
By 1935 an extensive selection
of porcelain and ceramic figurines had been placed into production of which many
are still made today.
