Ceramic Restorations of Westchester,
Inc. (CROW, Inc.) was founded in 1986 by retired M.I. Hummel Master Painter Hans
J. Schindhelm.
Hans apprenticed with the W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik, the manufacturer
of the famous M.I. Hummel collectibles from 1972 throughout 1975 and worked for the
company in Germany until 1986 in a variety of prestigious positions such as Limited
Edition Painter, Prototype Painter and Product Designer for Goebel's M.I. Hummel,
Walt Disney, Lore, Gunther Granget-, European-, American- and African Wildlife Collectibles.
During
his tenure with Goebel he also completed his formal education and received his
Masters Degree in the Ceramic Arts
focused on manufacture, technology, restoration
and teaching.
Since 1980 he has represented W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik at many
conventions, galleries and stores in Europe and the United States, demonstrating
the skills required to manufacture M.I. Hummel figurines to the interested collector.
Hans still maintains a working relationship with the factory in Germany and it's
distribution arm
Goebel North America in Pennington, New Jersey.
He personally
and constantly instructs all artists working at the repair & restoration studio
in Sleepy Hollow, New York and actively participates in each and every step of the

The cost of repairing a damaged collectible
can be as low as US $ 50.00 and depends very much on the nature and extent of the
damages, such as:
How many breaks, chips and/or cracks does the figurine have?
Are there any pieces missing which need to be replaced?
How much of an area
is affected by the repair and needs to be repainted?
What repair techniques and
materials can be used to repair it?
How many shades of colors must be matched?
These
are just a few of the variables encountered during the repair of a damaged
collectible
and since this type of work is inherently difficult, tidious and time consuming all
repairs will be estimated on a case to case basis. Estimates are free of charge and
without obligation to have any work done.
Simply send your damaged collectible(s)
via insured UPS or US Parcel Mail to our address. The written estimate will include
a work order form and will provide you with all details such as the repair cost,
time frame and the approximate value of the item(s) in question after repair. We
are unable to start any work unless you return the signed work order with your deposit/payment
(Master,
Visa, Discover Card, checks and money orders are accepted).
The state-of-the-art
restoration methods employed by Ceramic Restorations of Westchester, Inc. allows
the company to repair most damaged figurines in a cost effective manner. However,
in some cases it may happen that the repair cost exceeds the actual monetary value
of the figurine and we will advise you if that is the case.
The final decision
is always yours.
Most repairs will take about 3 - 4 hours, plus time for staging,
prepping, firing, drying and other rest times. However, since we must introduce figurines
in batches of 100 to 150 pieces at a time to the individual repair steps, it may
take several weeks or months to complete a batch. This is the only way to bring the
repair cost to an affordable level.
An estimated delivery time is listed in your
estimate.
Rush orders will incur extra charges.

Our artists employ state-of-the-art repair
& restoration methods (cold & fired) and use only premium materials which
guarantees high quality, invisible to the naked eye repair results in almost all
cases. The repair/restoration techniques and materials used vary from repair to repair
and are usually dictated by the materials your collectibles are made from, which
manufacturing techniques have been employed to make it and the extend and nature
of the damages.
The first step is to evaluate the damaged items to determine
which materials and repair techniques can be employed to repair them safely and effectively.
During this evaluation they will be cleaned and all non-original deposits or substances
applied during previous repair attempts (plaster, glue, paint, etc.) are removed.
Thereafter
sculptors assemble all breaks with speciality glues and/or glazes and fill all chips
and cracks with replacement materials. They can even recreate missing parts (fingers,
arms, legs etc.) which are then attached. The selection of materials and the actual
repair methods used are largely dictated by the materials the damaged items are made
from and the extend and nature of the damages.
Once all fillers and replacements
have been shaped every repaired section is then coated with glazes to match the original
base color and finish. Thereafter all repaired areas are repainted (only if needed)
with matching colors, using applicable painting techniques. Finally a finishing coat
which matches the feel and sheen of the original finish is applied. Where neccessary,
low temperature firing will be employed to develop and affix the repair colors, glazes
and finishing coats.
A final quality control assures the best possible repair
results.
